Kinshasa



Kinshasa (pop. 2,800,000), capital and largest city of Zaïre. It was founded in 1881 by the British explorer Henry M. Stanley, who named it Leopoldville after King Leopold II of Belgium. Its name was changed to Kinshasa in 1966, after Zaïre became independent.
