Ernst Ludwig Kirchner

Kirchner, Ernst Ludwig (1880–1938), German expressionist graphic artist and painter, cofounder of the Brücke (bridge) movement (1905–13). He is noted for his powerful, savagely expressive woodcuts and, in his painting, for his vigorous, distorted use of color and form. When his work was condemned by the Nazis as degenerate, Kirchner committed suicide.
