Lake Charles



Lake Charles (pop. 168,134), inland port city of southwest Louisiana, on the Calcasieu River, linked by a 33-mi (53-km) channel with the Gulf of Mexico. It lies at the center of a rich rice- and cattle-producing region. A commercial and industrial city, it ships chemicals, synthetic rubber, petroleum products, timber, rice, and cotton.
