Alphonse Marie Louis de Lamartine
Lamartine, Alphonse Marie Louis de (1790–1869), French poet and politician, briefly head of government after the 1848 revolution. His collection Poetic Meditations (1820) was a landmark of French Romantic literature and contains the famous poem “The Lake”; lyric evocations of love and nature are underlaid by gentle melancholy and religious feeling. Harmonies (1830) and Jocelyn (1836) were other poetic works.
