Lancaster



Lancaster (pop. 422,822), city in southeast Pennsylvania, county seat of Lancaster County. It is located 60 mi (96 km) west of Philadelphia, on the Conestoga River. Lancaster, settled in 1709 by the Amish, Moravian, and German Mennonites, is an agricultural, manufacturing, and marketing center. Points of interest include President James Buchanan's home, Wheatland; Mill Bridge Village; and nearby Amish and Mennonite farms.
