Lansing



Lansing (pop. 432,674), capital of Michigan, in the southern part of the state at the junction of the Grand and Cedar rivers. It is an important automobile-manufacturing and transportation center and the trading center of a rich farming area. Lansing was settled c.1837, succeeding Detroit as state capital in 1847. It was chartered as a city in 1859. Michigan State University is in East Lansing.
