Las Casas, Bartolomé de (1474–1566), Spanish missionary in Central America. He exposed the forced labor of the Indians, persuaded Madrid to enact the New Laws for Indian Welfare (1542), and in his History of the Indies recorded data valuable to modern anthropology.
