Ferdinand Marie de Lesseps



Lesseps, Ferdinand Marie de (1805–95), French diplomat and engineer who conceived the idea for the Suez Canal. Lesseps supervised the building of it (1859–69) himself. His later plans for the Panama Canal ended in bankruptcy (1888) and a conviction for misappropriation of monies.
