Liberal Republican Party

Liberal Republican Party, U.S. political party formed in 1872, during the administration of President Ulysses S. Grant to oppose the policies and the corruption of the administration. The Liberal Republicans nominated Horace Greeley for president, but when he was defeated (despite Democratic support), the party effectively broke up.
