Robert R. Livingston
Livingston, Robert R. (1746–1813), U.S. politician. A delegate to the Continental Congress, he helped draft the Declaration of Independence and, a year later, the New York state constitution. As chancellor of New York state (1777–1801) he administered the presidential oath of office to George Washington. In 1801 he began the negotiations that led to the Louisiana Purchase.
