John Alexander Logan



Logan, John Alexander (1826–86), Union general during the Civil War. Logan fought in the Western campaigns under Ulysses S. Grant and served with General William T. Sherman on his march through Georgia. After the capture of Vicksburg, Miss., Logan was made a general in command of volunteers. In a later political career, Logan represented Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives (1859–62, 1867–71) and in the senate (1871–77, 1879–86). He is also known as the originator of Memorial Day.
