Crawford Williamson Long
Long, Crawford Williamson (1815–78), U.S. physician who first used diethyl ether as an anesthetic during surgery (1842). His discovery followed his observation that students under the influence of ether at a party felt no pain when bruising or otherwise injuring themselves.
