Lourdes

Lourdes (pop. 17,300), town in southwestern France and site of Roman Catholic pilgrimage. The Virgin Mary is said to have appeared to St. Bernadette, then a 14-year-old peasant girl, in Lourdes in 1858. Lourdes is visited by some 3 million pilgrims annually.
