James Russell Lowell



Lowell, James Russell (1819–91), U.S. poet, editor, essayist, and diplomat. His poetry includes the didactic Vision of Sir Launfal (1848) and the satirical The Bigelow Papers (1848 and 1867). He was professor of modern languages at Harvard (1855–76) and U.S. minister to England (1877–85); his speeches were published in Democracy and Other Addresses (1887).
