Jean-Baptiste Lully
Lully, Jean-Baptiste (1632–87), Italian-born French composer. A favorite with Louis XIV, he conducted the court orchestra and wrote numerous court ballets. He wrote stage music for Molière, and his operas, particularly Alceste (1674), Amadis (1684), and Armide (1686), founded a French operatic tradition.
