Lyceum
Lyceum, gymnasium in ancient Athens where male youth received physical and intellectual training. In 335 B.C. Aristotle established his famous Lyceum outside the walls of the city. The school was named in honor of the god Apollo Lykeios. In the U.S. during the 19th century there was a lyceum movement which attempted to improve education.
