John Sandfield Macdonald



Macdonald, John Sandfield (1812–72), Canadian politician. An opponent of confederation, he served as prime minister of Canada (1862–6). When, in 1867, Canada was confederated, he served as the first prime minister for his home province, Ontario (1867–71). Educated and trained in law, he served at various posts in both Liberal and Conservative governments (1840–71).
