Dolley Payne Madison



Madison, Dolley Payne (1768–1849), wife of President James Madison. Known as an accomplished hostess during her husband's administration, she helped the widowed President Jefferson entertain during his presidency (1809–17). During the War of 1812, she fled the capital while it was under attack, rescuing a portrait of George Washington and important government documents.
