Naguib Mahfouz



Mahfouz, Naguib, or Mahfuz, Nagib (1911– ), Egyptian novelist, playwright, and screenwriter. Among his works, which focus on urban life, are Midaq Alley (tr. 1975), Miramar (tr. 1978), and the short story collection God's World (tr. 1973). He won the 1988 Nobel Prize for literature. His books have been banned in many Arab countries for his expression of support of the 1979 Egypt-Israel peace treaty and other controversial views.
