Mandan

Mandan, Native American Plains tribe of the upper Missouri valley. Of Siouan linguistic stock, they came from the east in the 18th century to inhabit what is now North Dakota. An agricultural people, the tribe was almost wiped out by disease and war in the early 19th century. The surviving Mandans, together with other tribes, live today on reservations in North Dakota.
