Mannheim

Mannheim (pop. 312,000), city in southwestern Germany, one of Europe's major inland ports. Founded in the early 1600s, it is situated near the junction of the Rhine and Neckar rivers in the heart of a major industrial region. It has also been a center for art, music, and drama since the 1700s and is the site of a major university containing striking examples of Baroque architecture. Heavily damaged in World War II, Mannheim was extensively rebuilt. Cultural sights include the National Theatre and several art museums.
