Alessandro Manzoni



Manzoni, Alessandro (1785–1873), Italian novelist and poet. He was a leading figure in the romantic movement, and his novel The Betrothed (1825–26) influenced Italian prose writers. Among his poems is the well-received Fifth of May (1821), on Napoleon's death. His own death inspired Verdi's Requiem (1874).
