Guglielmo Marconi



Marconi, Guglielmo (1874–1937), Italian physicist, awarded (with K.F. Braun) the 1909 Nobel Prize in physics for his work in devising a wireless telegraph. By 1895 he could transmit and receive signals at distances of about 1.2 mi (2 km). On Dec. 12, 1901, in St. John's, Newfoundland, he successfully received the first transatlantic radio communication.
