Martial law

Martial law, temporary superimposition of military on domestic civil government, usually in wartime or other national emergency. The army takes over executive and judicial functions, and civil rights such as habeas corpus may be suspended. When an invading army assumes control of a country, it is said to act not under martial law but as a military government.
