Vincent Massey



Massey, Vincent (1887–1967), Canadian diplomat. The first Canadian-born governor-general of Canada (1952–59), he became Canada's first minister in Washington (1926). From 1935–46 he was high commissioner in London. Massey also became chairperson of the Royal Commission on National Development in the Arts, Letters and Sciences (1949) and chancellor of the Univ. of Toronto (1947–53). In 1961 he founded Massey College. He also published several books of his speeches, and his autobiography, What's Past Is Prologue (1963).
