Materialism
Materialism, in philosophy, any view asserting the primacy of physical matter in explaining the nature of the world. The earliest materialists were the classical atomists, e.g., Democritus and Leucippus. Modern science has revived materialism, argued as a prerequisite for scientific thought, particularly in psychology.
