John Loudon McAdam
McAdam, John Loudon (1756–1836), British engineer and surveyor. He developed a method of paving roads using layers of crushed stone, that revolutionized road building throughout the world. Macadamized roads built in the early 1800s lasted until the 20th century and were the forerunners of many highways still in use today.
