John McLoughlin

McLoughlin, John (1784–1857), Canadian pioneer of the Oregon Territory. Directing (1824–46) the operations of the Hudson's Bay Company in the region of the Columbia River, McLoughlin was credited with achieving peace between Native American tribes and European-American settlers of the Columbia and Willamette river valleys. Often called the “father of Oregon,” McLoughlin's efforts contributed to the formation of the Oregon Territory (1848) and the achievement of statehood (1859).
