Marshall McLuhan
McLuhan, Marshall (1911–80), Canadian professor of humanities and mass communications specialist. He is best known for his influential Understanding Media (1964). It contains the famous phrase, “the medium is the message”—that is, the content of communication is determined by its means, with the implication that modern mass communications technology is creating a “global village” and transforming our way of thinking and perceiving.
