Felix Mendelssohn



Mendelssohn, Felix (1809–47), German Romantic composer. He wrote his concert overture to A Midsummer Night's Dream at age 17. Other works include his Hebrides Overture (also known as “Fingal's Cave,” 1830–32), Scotch (1842) and Italian (1833) symphonies, a violin concerto, chamber music, and the oratorio Elijah. He was also a celebrated conductor, notably of the Leipzig Gewandhaus orchestra, and he revived interest in the music of Johann Sebastian Bach.
