Menominee

Menominee, Native American tribe of the Algonquian linguistic group. For more than 5,000 years they lived in upper Michigan and Wisconsin, along the western shore of Green Bay, gathering wild rice (Menominee means wild rice people). In 1854 they were settled on a reservation on the Wolf and Oconto rivers in Wisconsin, now a county, where their descendants still live and work in the lumber business. In 1953, through the policy of termination, the U.S. government abolished the Menominee reservation, but reestablished it in 1975.
