Merrimack River
Merrimack River, stream of New England, flows 110 mi (177 km) from the White Mountains of New Hampshire through northeastern Massachusetts to the Atlantic Ocean. The river and its 6 waterfalls provided water power for the first U.S. textile factories; it now is harnessed to produce hydroelectricity. Merrimack means “swift water.”
