Meshed

Meshed (pop. 1,120,000), capital city of Khorsn province, northeastern Iran. Meshed, center of the northern wool trade, is also a religious center, visited by over 100,000 pilgrims annually. It contains the tombs of the caliph Hrn ar-Rashd (A.D. 809) and his son-in-law, religious leader Alar-Rid.
