Messenia



Messenia, region in the southern peninsula of Greece and seat of the ancient Mycenaean civilization. Under Spartan domination for hundreds of years, the Messenians were finally freed in the 4th century B.C. by Theben leader Epaminondas. Messenia is noted for its Frankish and Turkish castles, and for its rich farmland.
