Metz



Metz (pop. 123,900), city in northeastern France on the Moselle River, a center for iron and coal mining. Of pre-Roman origin, it became a bishopric and capital of the Frankish kingdom of Austrasia. France annexed it in 1552, and Germany held it from 1871 to 1918.
