Miami (city)

Miami (city) (pop. 367,000), city in southeast Florida, at the mouth of the Miami River on Biscayne Bay. Its near-tropical climate, fine hotels, beaches, and recreational facilities make it a world-famous resort center. Miami was chartered in 1896, when Henry Flagler brought the railroad to Biscayne Bay. Now an agricultural processing and shipping center, Miami is also a center for aircraft and ship rebuilding and textiles.
