Micmac

Micmac, Canadian Native Americans of New France (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and coastal Quebec), of the Algonquian language group. They lived by hunting and fishing, using canoes for transportation. They traded with the French explorer Jacques Cartier, who arrived in 1534, and strove unsuccessfully with the French to ward away the British. They numbered about 3,000 in the 17th and 18th centuries. They came under Canadian government in 1867. The Micmacs survive today as a tribal group engaged in guiding and farming.
