Jozsef Mindszenty



Mindszenty, Jozsef (1892–1975), Hungarian Roman Catholic cardinal who was sentenced (1949) to life imprisonment for his opposition to communism. Released in the uprising of 1956, he took refuge in the U.S. legation in Budapest. He refused to leave until the charges against him were rescinded. In 1971, after an agreement between the Vatican and the Hungarian government, Mindszenty left for Rome.
