Peter Minuit
Minuit, Peter (c. 1580–1638), Dutch colonial administrator in North America. He was the first director-general of New Netherland for the Dutch West India Company and is remembered for buying Manhattan island from the Native Americans (1626) for about $24 worth of trinkets. He founded New Amsterdam (now New York City) and later (1638) established New Sweden on the Delaware River.
