Miranda v. Arizona
Miranda v. Arizona, U.S. Supreme Court case (1966) establishing the rights of criminal suspects in police custody. In its 5–4 ruling the Court specified that prior to any sort of questioning suspects must be informed of their rights to remain silent and to have a lawyer present. Miranda had been questioned by police in Arizona and had confessed to a crime without having been told of these rights. The Court ruled that the confession was therefore inadmissible evidence.
