Jean Monnet



Monnet, Jean (1888–1979), French economist and politician, known as the architect of a united Western Europe. His Monnet Plan (1947) helped France's economic recovery after World War II. He served as first president of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), and helped organize the Common Market (European Community).
