Bar mitzvah

Bar mitzvah, Jewish religious ceremony marking a boy's entrance into the adult community, traditionally performed at the age of 13. The initiate is usually called upon to read part of the weekly portion of the Pentateuch or the Prophets in the synagogue. The equivalent for girls, the bas (or bat) mitzvah, was established in 20th-century Reform and Conservative Judaism.
