Basse-Terre
Basse-Terre (pop. 14,300), capital city of the French department of Guadeloupe in the Antilles islands in the Caribbean. Settled by the French in 1643, Basse-Terre is a transportation center exporting bananas, coffee, cocoa, and sugar.
