Belgrade
Belgrade (pop. 1,087,900), capital and largest city of Yugoslavia, a port and industrial center at the junction of the Danube and Sava rivers. Important products include metals, chemicals, and textiles. Held in turn by the Romans, Byzantines, Bulgars, Serbs, and Ottoman Turks, the city became Yugoslavia's capital after World War I and kept it's status after the desintegration of former Yugoslavia in 1991. Belgrade is known for its beautiful parks, churches, and museums.
