Bengal

Bengal, region including Bangladesh and northeastern India on the Bay of Bengal. Its chief city, Calcutta, was capital of British India 1833–1912, and it was an autonomous province from 1935 until the partition of India in 1947. At that time the western part became West Bengal State of India. The eastern part became a province of Pakistan, and in 1971, the independent nation of Bangladesh.
