Sir William Berkeley



Berkeley, Sir William (1606–77), royal governor of Virginia, 1642–52 and 1660–77. His inability to deal with Native American frontier attacks led to Bacon's Rebellion (1676). Berkeley's harsh treatment of the rebels led to his recall to England.
