Battle of Blenheim



Blenheim, Battle of, decisive battle in the War of Spanish Succession. On Aug. 13, 1704, troops of the Grand Alliance (England, Austria, and the United Provinces), commanded by the Duke of Marlborough and Prince Eugene of Savoy, triumphed over the Franco-Bavarian soldiers under Marshall Tallard. Fought on the Danube between the Bavarian villages of Blindheim and Hochstadt, Blenheim saved Vienna from the forces of King Louis XIV, consolidated the Grand Alliance, and ended French occupation of Germany.
