Louis Braille



Braille, Louis (1809–52), French inventor of braille. Accidentally blinded at the age of 3, he conceived his raised-dot system at 15, while at the National Institute for the Blind in Paris. In 1829 he published a book explaining how his system could be used, not only for reading but also for writing and musical notation.
