Laura Dewey Bridgman
Bridgman, Laura Dewey (1829–89), first blind and deaf child to be successfully educated in the United States. She was taught the names of objects by raised letters pasted onto the objects themselves and eventually learned finger-spelling, thus paving the way for the education of other deaf-blind youths such as Helen Keller.
