Brisbane

Brisbane (pop. 1,301,700), city and seaport in eastern Australia, capital of the state of Queensland. The city is built on both banks of the navigable Brisbane River, about 15 mi (24 km) from the outlet to the Pacific Ocean. The area was a penal settlement in 1824, then in 1838 became a city. Queensland became a separate colony in 1859.
